Juggling work and home schooling?

2021 hasn’t started the way we’d all hoped. We have been thrust into lockdown number 3!! Whilst I don’t think that it came as a surprise to any of us, many of us have found this one particularly hard. It’s not surprising, we are 10 months in and it’s winter. Whilst we can see an end in sight it’s still frustrating that we are stuck in and can’t spend time with our family and friends. Everyone is having to deal with boredom, we probably have lots to do but motivating ourselves can be tough. If you’re a parent with kids, you have home schooling to face each day and to try motivating the kids too!

Are you ready for business in 2021?

To say that 2020 has been the most challenging and uncertain year for decades is probably a slight understatement. This year has been tough for both people and businesses alike.

Businesses of all sizes have been hit hard, even Marks and Spencer’s has made a loss for the first time in 94 years! In fact, Barclays has reported that a whopping 82% of SMEs in the UK have been negatively impacted by Covid 19. Many businesses have lost customers overnight and have had to put their employees on furlough. Some will, and have had, no alternative but to make redundancies.

Mental Health Post C-19

Mental health in the workplace started out as a corporate buzz word for taking care of ourselves when not all ailments are visual or even physical. We limit stress to avoid lost time on teams and wages on PAYE. Mental health is rightly becoming far more recognised and appreciated as a workplace imperative rather than something employers either ignored or viewed as simply a HR issue.

Our New World

For most of us the last few months has forced us to live very differently. Perhaps key workers may still have some sense of normality, albeit their working practices will undoubtedly have changed.

This time has provided many of us with the luxury of head-space, (for some, sadly, possibly too much) and the opportunity for reflection and to re-assess our lives, our values and beliefs and reconnect with family and friends. For some this may result in life changing decisions.

Fair or Foul?

I don’t normally write about specifics in my blog, but in this instance, I’m going to talk about a company where a friend of mine works as it perfectly demonstrates the point I’d like to make.

What’s the point? Basically – it’s a warning.

Avoiding conflict as a manager can be incredibly detrimental – to you, to your team, to your business.

Harmony in the workplace

There is little doubt that the global pandemic has had an effect on everyone, for many it has been challenging and uncertain, for others it may still have been challenging but it has opened up opportunities and for others it has meant that they have had to work harder than ever ….

The simple things in life…

Once a month I have the pleasure of meeting up with some great people to talk through our thoughts and ideas that we have with our businesses. We come together and help each other out with our thinking. This is all due and thanks to Jo Hompstead at ConnectUp.

I was really inspired by a discussion in the group that I was part of this month. We were discussing how, as we have got older, we have realised that we need far less than we always thought. Personally, I am the happiest I have ever been and in so many ways have far less “stuff” for the want of a better word. I just love my life… as it is, without the extra materialistic items, or without the extra mental clutter. I do believe that the whole idea of being thankful really does bring you greater happiness!

Honesty is the best policy…

As a child I had two things hammered home about honesty……

  • The first (and obvious one) about it being the best policy.
  • The second was that you have to have a great memory to be a good liar.

So, yep you’ve got it, honesty is without doubt the best policy or to be sure your sins will find you out if not!

I have a dream…

I’m sure most of you know of Martin Luther King and what he stood for – civil rights – primarily for minority groups in the USA, from 1955 until 1968 when he was assassinated. In many ways things have moved on since then thank goodness, although not nearly enough in the world at large or the world of business.

What is integrity?

Integrity is a common value in businesses, but what does Integrity actually mean?

The English Dictionary definition is : ‘the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles’.

However, I have found Integrity to be sadly lacking in many businesses and people. But why is this? I was going to write my thoughts, but found this article by Amy Reece Anderson in Forbes, which sums it up perfectly and is well worth reading,.

The Epitome of TRUST and teamwork

Welcome to my first blog and introduction to Liaise, a potted history of my professional journey and how Liaise has come about.

I have always loved working with people and their different personalities, egos and foibles. Often challenging, rarely dull, but incredibly satisfying. For the last 30 years I have worked in training, people and organisational development and for different types of business. Whilst each business and person are unique, I have found that their development needs are very similar, regardless of area of expertise and business size.
